After achieving the rank of Professor, he moved to Penn State with the title of Stanley Person Professor. There, he founded the Center for Microbial Structural Biology and is a charter member of the Penn State Astrobiology Research Center (PSARC). His research interests are in the areas of enzymology, molecular biology and physiology of anaerobic microbes from the domain Archaea with a focus on ancient energy-yielding pathways and adaptation to oxidative stress.
