The mission of the Center for the Physics of Living Cells at the University of Illinois is to create a quantitative, predictive, and physically-based description of living systems. The 2016 CPLC Summer School will offer multi-scale training in the latest experimental, computational, and theoretical biophysical approaches to the following scientific themes: Neurobiology, Genome biology, RNA biology
This summer school is designed for graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and researchers in physics, biophysics, chemical and life sciences, and engineering who seek to expand their research skills into these areas. The workshop will comprise lectures and hands-on training in specific topics and tools.

BMSIS provides opportunities for college students to participate as Young Scientists with our institute. Young Scientists conduct supervised research under direct supervision by a BMSIS mentor. BMSIS Young Scientists will also be paired with a communication mentor to help develop their skills in science communication. The Young Scientist Program includes required modules in science communication as well as ethics and society with guidance from their research, communication, and ethics mentors.

The next Astrobiology Graduate Conference will be held at the University of Colorado in Boulder (CU). Graduate students run the conference for other graduate students and early career scientists with the purpose of having conference attendees share their astrobiology-related research, collaborate with their peers, and make new professional connections in a low-pressure setting.
Conference attendees share their research over a period of two days. Attendees have the option of presenting a 15-minute talk or presenting a poster (though talks are preferred). Topics to be covered include astrochemistry, exoplanet research, planetary science, geobiology, computer science, origins of life research, and aerospace engineering. The conference culminates on the third day with attendees participating in a field trip at an astrobiologically relevant site: Dinosaur Ridge in Morrison, CO. A Public Speaking Workshop will be held as an alternate for those who do not want to attend the field trip. In addition to the stated conference agenda, public outreach activities will be held throughout the week, including a trivia and games night and an evening at CU’s Fiske Planetarium.
Attendees also have the option of joining, separate from the conference, the Research Focus Group (RFG) workshop that will take place from July 22nd through 24th in Estes Park, Colorado. The RFG is a proposal-writing workshop targeted at developing better, fundable proposals for research.
Food and lodging for conference attendees will be covered by the conference. We also expect to be able to cover most travel costs for attendees.

The Astrobiology Early Career Collaboration Awards offer research-related travel support for undergraduate, graduate students, postdocs, and junior scientists. Applicants are encouraged to use these resources to circulate among two or more laboratories supported by the NASA Astrobiology Program (Exobiology and Evolutionary Biology, the NAI, Planetary Science and Technology Through Analog Research, MatiSSE, PICASSO and the Habitable Worlds), however any travel that is critical for the applicant’s research will be considered. Travelers must be formally affiliated with a U.S. institution. Requests are limited to $5,000.

The International Space Science Institute (ISSI) has two open positions, one in Space Sciences and the other in Earth Sciences. The successful candidates should have received a Ph.D. within the last five years in a field relating to either Space or Earth Sciences.
Applications for the post-doctoral position in Space Sciences should relate to space physics, solar system sciences, or to astronomy. Applications for the post-doctoral position in Earth Sciences should relate to remote sensing of the Earth system including climate.
The successful candidate is expected to pursue his/her independent research program, and will participate in the Institute’s research and meetings program, and will work in close contact with the scientific staff of the Institute. He or she may also lead or participate as a member in projects conducted by international teams at ISSI. Thus he or she will be exposed to, and interact with, a numerous and varied community of scientists from throughout the world.
Nationals from ESA Member States shall have priority. Salary and conditions of employment will be similar to those provided by the Swiss National Science Foundation. Further information may be obtained at http://www.issibern.ch.
Submissions should include a letter of application including a brief outline of foreseen research, a curriculum vitae, a list of publications and the names, addresses and means of contact of three references, not exceeding 7 pages in total. They shall be addressed to ISSI, attn. Professor R. von Steiger, Hallerstrasse 6, CH-3012 Bern, Switzerland; email: vsteiger@issibern.ch. Submissions by email are preferred provided all the documents are in the form of a single PDF file.
