Clipper’s Winter Wonderland and Other Seasonal Pages


Europa Clipper is Earth’s first mission to conduct a detailed study of Jupiter’s moon Europa. Earth experiences a ‘Winter Wonderland’ as the seasons change. But the surface of Europa is permanently covered in an icy, frozen shell that hides a vast subsurface ocean of liquid water. NASA’s OSIRIS-REx (Origins, Spectral Interpretation, Resource Identification and Security – Regolith Explorer) delivered an amazing present to Earth on September 24, 2023... samples from the asteroid Bennu! OSIRIS-REx is the first mission from the United States of America to collect a sample from an asteroid.

Scientists have to unwrap the 4.5 billion-year-old samples from NASA’s OSIRIS-REx (Origins, Spectral Interpretation, Resource Identification and Security – Regolith Explorer) in special chambers to keep them pristine and to avoid contamination from Earth. OSIRIS-REx brought samples of the asteroid Bennu back to Earth on September 24, 2023.

OSIRIS-REx Samples an Asteroid!


Download free coloring pages based on NASA’s Origins, Spectral Interpretation, Resource Identification, and Security-Regolith Explorer, or OSIRIS-REx, spacecraft! The artwork has been adapted from the Astrobiology Graphic Histories, and features the spectacular mission of OSIRIS-REx to collect samples from the asteroid Bennu and return them to scientists on Earth. OSIRIS-REx reaches out to collect samples from the surface of the near-Earth asteroid named Bennu (formerly 1999 RQ36). The pristine material delivered back to Earth will help scientists understand the formation of the Sun and planets.

On September 24, 2023, OSIRIS-REx released its sample capsule, delivering material from the asteroid Bennu to the Utah desert. Scientists on Earth will study the material in order to learn about the formation of the Sun and planets about 4.5 billion years ago.

Ingenuity will make the first powered flight on another planet. Perseverance itself will store samples of Mars in tubes (seen in the foreground). A future Mars Sample Return mission will collect these samples and return them to Earth, giving astrobiologists their first chance to examine pieces of modern-day Mars up close.

NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) is a large infrared telescope with a 6.5-meter primary mirror. Thousands of astronomers worldwide will use JWST to study the Universe, including the evolution of the Solar System and the formation of distant stellar systems that might be capable of supporting life on Earth-like planets.

Draw Your Version of Extreme Life


Go on a journey to understand Earth’s extremophiles. Scientists examine harsh environments on Earth in order to identify the mechanisms that life uses to survive at the limits of habitability. This information could provide clues as to whether or not life as we know it might live on other worlds in the Universe.

In the late 1960’s, Thomas Brock and his colleagues identified bacteria living in outflow waters from the boiling hot springs of Yellowstone National Park. The finding opened a new area of astrobiology research on extremophiles.
In the late 1960’s, Thomas Brock and his colleagues identified bacteria living in outflow waters from the boiling hot springs of Yellowstone National Park. The microbe, known as Thermus aquaticus, is what is now known as a thermophile (heat loving) organism. The finding opened a new area of astrobiology research on extremophiles.

Life can thrive in terrestrial hot springs on Earth. These environments are considered 'extreme' for most life because they are very hot. The springs can also challenge life with other extreme conditions, such as acidity, alkalinity, and salinity. But in order to survive in terrestrial hot springs, most organisms need to be thermophiles, a term that means 'heat loving.'
