On February 14, 1990, NASA’s Voyager 1 space probe sent the now iconic Pale Blue Dot image back to Earth. Voyager 1 was traveling out of the Solar System and was past Neptune at a distance of 3.7 billion miles (6 billion kilometers) away from the Sun when when it pointed its cameras back toward home for a final time. The powerful photograph shows the Earth as a speck of light within a scattered ray of sunlight. Because Voyager 1 was so far away from our planet, Earth is just a point of light about a pixel in size. The image was part of a series of 60 images that were used to create the first “family portrait” of the Solar System.
