Notice from the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine

The next cohort application cycle for New Voices has been announced, an initiative of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine (NAS). A diverse cohort of 18 mid-career experts will have the opportunity to bring their collective ideas about critical and emerging interdisciplinary issues to the work of the National Academies. During the course of the two year program, members are given an opportunity work within an extremely diverse cohort of outstanding leaders to collectively advance their ideas about the future of science, engineering and medicine. By design, the cohort’s objectives are self-defined at the start of each program cycle.

Program details and eligibility

  • The program is open to U.S. scientists, engineers, health professionals and related expertise.
  • Applicants should be U.S.-based with primary affiliation with a U.S. institution.
  • Selected members are typically within 10-12 years of their advanced degree.
  • Applicants from industry, academia, public service, non-profit and other sectors are eligible to apply.

The two-year program runs from mid-2021 to 2023. The deadline for this application is March 31st, 2021.

Members invited to join the cohort will be expected to attend 3 meetings per year (virtually at least for most of 2021), participate in member committees, and join engagements with National Academies leadership. Members may have the opportunity to participate as expert volunteers in other National Academies activities. New Voices is not a fellowship or training program and no stipend is provided. All participation expenses are covered by the program.
