Biophysicist and evolutionary microbiologist Carl R. Woese is a well-known figure in the history of astrobiology and exobiology at NASA. Dr. Woese was the first recipient of a grant from NASA’s Exobiology program in 1975, and his work helped shape our understanding of life’s history on Earth. One of his most important scientific discoveries was the identification of the ‘third domain of life,’ archaea, in 1977.

The New York Times recently featured the work of Carl Woese, discussing how he altered our understanding of the tree of life in an article entitled, “The Scientist Who Scrambled Darwin’s Tree of Life.” The article is available here.
