On March 30th, 2018, astrobiologists convened in Atlanta for the 2018 Astrobiology Colloquium hosted by Georgia Tech. The theme of this year’s colloquium was ‘Exploring Life Origins and the Universe: A Networking Event.’
The Astrobiology Colloquium is an event designed for early career scientists, and provides a series of engaging events for astrobiologists who are relatively new to the field. Talks and presentations were given by students (both graduate and undergraduate) and post-doctoral fellows working in astrobiology, space science, and engineering. Speakers were drawn from across the Georgia Tech campus and greater Atlanta. Beyond the talks and poster presentations, attendees also took part in networking and innovation platform activities to explore collaborative ideas and forge connections between the participants that could lead to future opportunities.
This year’s event also featured plenary talks by established and distinguished members of the astrobiology community:
- Dr. Ada Yonath (Weizmann Institute, Israel): What Was First, the Genetic Code or its Products?
- Dr. Niles Lehman (Portland State University): Scrambling to Build the RNA World
- Dr. Shawn Domagal-Goldman (NASA Goddard Space Flight Center): LUVOIR: An Astrobiology Mission to Targets Near and Far
The hope is that this year’s Astrobiology Colloquium will be the first in a yearly series of events. For further information, visit: https://astrobiology.blog/astrobiology-colloquium/
