Terence Kee
University of Leeds

Biography

Terry Kee is a Reader in inorganic chemistry in the School of Chemistry. He took a BSc. (1985) and PhD (1989) in organometallic chemistry at Durham University. Following this he spent 18 months as an SERC Postdoctoral fellow at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology working with Nobel Laureate Professor Richard Schrock. He was appointed lecturer at the University of Leeds in 1990 and subsequently senior lecturer (1997) and reader (2010). Dr Kee has also been a Visiting Professor at the Université de Cergy-Pontoise, France (1999), is a member of the EPSRC Peer Review College, editorial board member of the RSC magazine Education in Chemistry (2002-2009) and is currently the 2009 STFC Aurora Fellow in Astrobiology (2009-2012) and chairman of the Astrobiology Society of Britain (2010-2012). He is author or co-author of over 100 published journal articles, books chapters and reviews.

Dr Kee’s interests in abiogenesis focus on features of the “Phosphorus (P) Problem”; specifically the emergence of phosphate-based biochemistry. This impacts on questions relating to the emergence of RNA, P-based cell membranes and organophosphorus compounds. Currently, the Kee laboratory are exploring questions of how activated P-compounds could have been exploited within primitive bioenergetic systems; the emergence of condensed phosphorus oxyacids as primitive P-based energy currency molecules and how such systems could have developed chemically into the sophisticated protein-NTP based bioenergetic systems of contemporary biochemistry.
