EPO Activity: Astrobiology Documentary Film

Project Progress

ABRC has partnered with MSU’s renowned Science and Natural History Filmmaking Program to create a one-hour documentary film that takes a personal look at scientists around the U.S. working with the NASA Astrobiology Institute (NAI) to understand the origin of life. Attempting the seemingly impossible, these researchers want to answer one of humanity’s oldest questions – how did life begin? Misunderstood by most of the public, the NAI scientists face not only a myriad of problems in the lab but also a series of obstacles they must overcome when attempting to communicate their work to a skeptical public. Science Outsiders chronicles the struggles of these scientists in their attempt to both understand the nature of life on Earth, and be understood by people outside the confines of their lab. Each scientist is challenged to develop and execute a radical new way of communicating their research to the rest of the world in an attempt to prove that their work is a worthy pursuit. Once the film is completed in late 2011, ABRC will work to have the program distributed via a national outlet such as National Geographic, the Discovery Channel or PBS.
