EPO Activity: Icy Worlds E/PO: Classroom Visits and JPL Tours

Project Progress

Kevin Hand and Rachel Zimmerman Brachman visited Nikki Chambers’ high school astrobiology classes at West High School in Torrance, CA. The four second year astrobiology students visited astrobiology labs at JPL. 75 students were reached during the classroom visits.

In 2011, high school astrobiology teacher Nikki Chambers won Teacher of the Year at her school and district for her pioneering work in developing an astrobiology curriculum and implementing it in her classroom. She was among the top 12 finalists for 2011 California Teacher of the Year. Nikki has participated in several NAI teacher professional development events, and has made presentations at AbSciCon, the California Science Teachers Association annual conference, and other conferences. In December 2011, she will be presenting her work on high school astrobiology education at the American Geophysical Union annual conference.
