EPO Activity: EPO: Visits to Local Schools

Project Progress

As part of a multifaceted education and public outreach plan, we are encouraging team scientists, researchers and students to reach out to local schools.

On February 24, 2009, Dr. Timmes presented a program called “Moon, Mars and Aliens” to 20 first grade students at Kyrene de Lomos Elementary school in Phoenix, Arizona. Dr. Timmes used Earth Mars Comparison posters, 3D images of Mars, the NASA A,B,C’s (coloring pages) to excite the class (Figure 1).

On March 17, 2009, Dr. Ariel Anbar visited the 3rd grade class at Kyrene del Cielo Elementary School in Tempe, Arizona. Dr. Anbar used meteorites and samples of ancient sediments to motivate understanding of geologic time.

We intend to do more of these types of visits in the coming year as we work to develop our elementary and secondary outreach program.
