Project Progress

ANSMET stands for the Antarctic search for meteorites and has been funded by NSF to collect meteorites for 30 years. Each year, a group of volunteers, lead by P. I. Ralph Harvey, treks to the southernmost continent to collect meteorites for the study by the meteorite community. This is one of the few altruistic programs where the samples are made available to the whole community, not just those who actually collect them.

With the assistance of a discretionary Astrobiology grant, we were able to purchase a satellite phone and uplink time to keep a blog from the field for the 2006-2007 field season. Dr. Barbara Cohen head up our outreach team and planned and executed many exercises for teachers to give their students. We prepared the exercises and background materials before leaving for the field and then uploaded data (Figs. 1-2) for the students to use in the classroom exercises. In addition, we wrote articles on our experience in Antarctica, how we collect meteorites and about many of the interesting features of the extreme environment.
