EPO Activity: Women in Science & Engineering Mentoring Event

Project Progress

On April 4-5, 2013, NYCA co-investigator Suzanne Baldwin and faculty colleague Linda Ivany hosted a visit by Dean Laurie Leshin (Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute) to the Department of Earth Sciences at Syracuse University. This event was also supported by Syracuse University and the NSF ADVANCE program.

Dr. Leshin gave a lecture, “Science on Mars Time: Roving the Red Planet with Curiosity,” in conjunction with presentation of the Slepecky Prize for Undergraduate Research. The Slepecky Award is offered to the student who demonstrates excellence in scholarship and submits the best manuscript or presentation from a professional meeting in the natural sciences and engineering. The lecture was attended by 60-70 people, mostly students and faculty of the Department of Earth Sciences but also including Women in Science and Engineering faculty members, family and friends of Dr. Norma Slepecky, Slepecky Award winners and their friends and advisors, and interested members of the university community and the public. Earth Sciences students included undergraduates and graduates at roughly a 40:60 split.
