EPO Activity: Science on the Streets
Project Progress
MIT team member Benjamin Kotrc has been participating in the Cambridge Science Festival’s effort to reach populations not served by the annual festival in April by traveling to their communities throughout the year, a new program named Science on the Streets. We brought to this new effort an interactive exhibit on water-related geomorpholgical features on Mars and Earth as well as a new activity on geological time, explaining the vastness of Earth history by compressing major evolutionary events into sixty minutes (illustrated with hands-on fossils from the Harvard Museum of Comparative Zoology), developed with Co-I Ann Pearson. During the reporting period, we brought these activities to the Boston Public Schools middle school orientation event (“Middle O!”) at Fenway Park, an event to which all rising sixth-graders in the district (and their families) are invited, as well as the Harvard Bookstore’s Warehouse Weekends in Somerville, a new community event with a Science Fact/Science Fiction theme.
