Lisa is a writer, planner and trainer with nearly forty years in her career in interpretation, the art and science of communicating technical subjects in relatable ways. She is a graduate of Texas A&M University, author of Interpretive Planning: The 5-M Model for Successful Planning Projects, and co-author of Interpretation by Design: Graphic Design Basics for Heritage Interpreters. Over the course of her career, Lisa has worked throughout the United States and 24 other countries with diverse private and public agencies and organizations including science centers, national parks, wildlife refuges, zoos, aquariums, botanical gardens and cultural sites. Recent keynote addresses have included the Swedish Centre for Nature Interpretation, the Korea Forestry Institute, and Western Australia’s Forum for Culture and Ecotourism. She spent ten years as Associate Director of National Association for Interpretation (NAI) and led the development and implementation of their internationally recognized certification program. She and her husband, Tim Merriman, opened their consulting business, Heartfelt Associates, in 2012 after leaving NAI and currently reside in Captain Cook on Hawaii Island.
