Instrumentation for the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence

We propose to build a new instrument system for the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI). This instrument will be developed economically using commodity components, leveraging the open-source hardware and software infrastructure developed by the Center for Astronomy Signal Processing and Electronics Research (CASPER). The complete instrument design and software will be shared with the radio astronomy and SETI communities, enabling research and student training at several institutions. We intend to employ this instrument in commensal SETI sky surveys at Arecibo Observatory and the Green Bank Telescope. In addition, we hope to build copies of the instruments proposed here for several other potential users. Many components of the instrument design will be useful for a variety of other radio astronomy applications, including transient investigations, wideband spectroscopy and VLBI.
