  1. Question

How many recorded moon landings have there been either by NASA or any other country in the world?

It is difficult to give a count of lunar landings because, while many spacecraft reached the Moon, not all of them were successful. The first spacecraft to land on the Moon were from the USSR (Russia). Luna 2 crash-landed in September 1959, while Luna 9 made the first soft landing in February 1966 and sent back the first pictures from the lunar surface. In 1965 the US successfully sent back data from 3 Ranger hard-landing spacecraft, after 6 previous failures. The first US soft lander, Surveyer 1, touched down on June 2, 1966, followed by four other successful Surveyer landings. The six successful Apollo landings (Apollos 11, 12, 14, 15, 16, 17) took place between July 1969 and December 1972. In the same time frame the USSR successfully sent two lunar rover missions (Lunakhods) and three sample return missions. While there have been several lunar orbit missions since then, there have been no additional landings since the 1960s, unless you wish to count the intentional crash-landing at the end of the Lunar Prospector mission.
