  1. Question

How long does it take light to travel from the Sun to Earth, and what is the formula? (I would like to calculate the answer with my students.)

The formula is very simple: speed equals distance divided by time, or equivalently time equals distance divided by speed. Your students may be familiar with this, since they may know how estimate the driving time between two towns, given the speed of the car. Just look up the distance to the Sun and divide by the speed of light. The travel time between the Sun and the Earth is approximately 500 seconds, or about 8 minutes.
