  1. Question

How does the environments in which cynobacteria live today compare with their past environments?

Cyanobacteria (sometimes caled blue-green algae) are found almost everywhere today, an they have been one of the most successful lifeforms on our planet. They exist as both single cells and colonies of cells, and they are presumably the origin of the chloroplasts (the photosynthetic units) in all plants. While we do not know much about the ecology of cyanobacteria in earlier times, they probably have occupied similar environments for at least the past 2 billion years, and perhaps for as long as 3.5 billion years. For more about cyanobacteria, check out the following website at the University of California at Berkeley .
