Question
What would happen to an Earth plant if it were just left out in the harsh Martian environment?
An Earth plant exposed to martian conditions would quickly die. A few microbes would be more tolerant and might survive in a desiccated state, but as far as we know there is no terrestrial life, including microbes, that could actually "make a living" and reproduce on Mars (at least on the martian surface). Growing a plant on Mars would require that we construct an artificial environment that is warmer and wetter and protected from the harsh ultraviolet light that strikes the surface.
