Question
What is the importance of Mars to our solar system or mankind?
For astrobiologists, Mars is the planet in our solar system that is most like Earth and (in the opinion of many) the planet most likely to have had a robust biosphere in the past (roughly 4 billion years ago). Mars has therefore been our primary target for exploration in order to assess its habitability. The issues of the habitability of Mars and the search for life on Mars are dealt with in many previous answers posted on "Ask an Astrobiologist". Mars is also the only other planet in our solar system where we can easily imagine establishing a permanent human outpost.
