    What mammalian species would be most suited to live on a teraformed Mars. Primarily as a source of protein for humans

    That is a very relevant question. And as technology progresses that question will be addressed. At this point in time though, current research is focused on the prospect of terraforming, which is the act of transforming a landscape on another planet into having the characteristics of landscapes on Earth. So before the topic that you have broached can be addressed, scientists must first initiate a biosphere beyond Earth. Chris McKay, a scientist with NASA Space Science Division at Ames Research Center, lends a strong voice to the idea of exploring Mars and all of the possibilities the planet offers, such as human settlements.
