  1. Question

If the world was going to end would you tell us?

The short answer is "of course I would tell you". Science is about discovering and communicating the truth about nature, not keeping secrets. But on a more basic level, I don't understand your question or many others that ask about a possible end of the world in 2012. The question itself makes no sense to me. This world has been peacefully going its way for 4.5 billion years, with life evolving for probably 4 billion years. Do you really imagine that after 4 billion years it is all going to end less than 5 years from now? And how could it possibly happen? There is nothing around that could destroy a planet. The worst damage that we could inflect on our ecosystem is probably associated with global warming and loss of habitat, which are already causing a mass extinction, but none of that threatens the future of the planet itself. I don't know where such questions about the end of the world are coming from, but it is unrelated to the real world that science studies and in which I live.
