Question
If I went to mars would I be able to grow plants in the soil?
Plants will not grow on Mars today because it is far too inhospitable a place, with temperatures below freezing, hardly any water, and deadly ultraviolet radiation from the Sun. The soil itself may not be a problem, however. One interesting idea is to take some martian soil and place it in an environment with liquid water, temperatures above freezing, and UV protection. If we introduced seeds, it seems probable that plants would indeed grow under these conditions. David Morrison
