Question
How efficient do you think are our methods of receiving radio-signals are-for possible detection of extra-terrestrial life?
The sensitivity of radio receivers and signal-processing systems have been rapidly advancing, pretty closely following Moore's Law, doubling approximately every 18-24 months. Today, various SETI systems have the capability to detect beacon-type signals to distances of several hundred light years, but are not quite able to detect unintentional "leakage" signals like those emitted by Earth for any but the very nearest stars. The dedication last month of the Allan Telescope Array (ATA) at Hat Creek, California, represents a major step in sensitivity of SETI searches. For details on both our current sensitivity and the role that the ATA will play, check out the SETI Institute website (http://seti.org). David Morrison
