  1. Question

Does the government have aliens in area 51?

Probably not, considering the fact that the chunk of Nevada desert known as "Area 51" ceased to exist several decades ago. Many people would like to think so, however, given the popular use of "Area 51" for a backdrop in countless science-fiction stories, TV series, movies, and tabloid newspapers. Despite these inventions, "Area 51" remains what used to be a testing ground for experimental fighter planes in the 1950's. Many of these experimental aircraft—held secret from the public for the sake of national security—have been known to have been mistaken for UFO’s by civilian observers. Today the same strip of desert is used by the Department of Defense as part of its 4,120 square-mile Nellis Air Force Range. The so-called "Area 51" is now the Air Force's "operation location near Groom Lake, Nevada." While information concerning activities near Groom Lake still remains classified for the sake of national security, you can check out the most recent statement from President Bush regarding Groom Lake at: http://www.whitehouse.gov/news/releases/2002/01/20020130-11.html Anna Lee Strachan, NASA Astrobiology Institute
