Are there any alternatives to coal and oil that could fuel the industrial revolution on a world without the ancient swamps of Earth?
I can only suggest the obvious alternative energy sources we are looking at today: hydro, geothermal, wind, nuclear, biomass, etc. Historically on this planet, wind and water and biomass (wood) have all been used for centuries, and they played an important role in the start of the industrial revolution. Then, the invention of the steam engine in the late eighteenth century triggered the shift to coal as the major energy source, and about a century ago the development of the naval oil turbine and automotive and aircraft internal combustion engines began our dependency on oil.
