Question
Are there any standard ISO procedures for examining material that does not originate from Earth?
No. While the International Organization for Standardization may have over 13,000 standards set for business and governments worldwide, there is no current ISO standard dictating how non-terrestrial materials should be examined. However, as the development of sample-return missions and multinational collaboration becomes more common, the need for standardization of such analyses becomes critical. If we are to understand the potential for organic materials to exist on other planets or extraterrestrial objects (such as comets or asteroids) we will need future agreement between protocols to properly assess the possibililty of life outside the Earth.
