Question
I dont really understand the Drake equation, can you please explain it?
The Drake equation provides a convenient way to indicate the unknown factors that we would have to determine to make a realistic estimate of the number of technological civilizations in our Galaxy. It outlines what we don't know as well as what we do know about habitable planets, the origin of life, the evolution of intelligence, and the development of technology. In effect, these various factors constitute a research agenda for SETI and for astrobiology generally. The Drake equation is discussed in most books dealing with SETI or astrobiology. I also recommend these two websites: the SETI Institute [http://www.seti.org/site/pp.asp?c=ktJ2J9MMIsE&b=179073] and Activemind [http://www.activemind.com/Mysterious/Topics/SETI/drake_equation.html].
