Question
How did math take part in uncovering Neptune?
The story of the discovery of Neptune is a fascinating one that you can find in almost any introductory book on astronomy. Very briefly, deviations from the predicted orbit of Uranus were found in the early 1840s, and it was suggested that these were caused by an unknown planet exterior to Uranus. Two talented mathematicians (Adams in England and Le Verrier in France) used these deviations to calculate the position of the unknown planet, which was then discovered in 1846 and named Neptune.
