What are possible alternative environments in which life may have originated?
There is a great deal of uncertainty about the conditions under which life originated. Suggestions range from small bodies of water (such as Darwin's suggestion of warm ponds) to wave-washed ocean beaches to thermal springs, including hot springs deep in the ocean. There are proponents of each of these environments and others as well. Scientists just don't know.
