Question
This is not neccessary that life is only possible due to favourable conditions. Maybe there is a different kind of life on Mars?
Defining life is difficult, since the only life we know about is the life on Earth, which is descended from one or more similar common ancestors. We are not smart enough to know what other forms life may take on another world, or what conditions are required. But as a practical matter, it makes sense to start with what we know about life on Earth. In practice, probably we could only recognize alien life that is chemically similar to the life we know on Earth.
